Naperville Sedation Dentistry

What Is Dental Sedation?

Understanding The Basics

Dental sedation is one of the best ways to help nervous or anxious kids get the dental care they need in Naperville. At Pinky Promise Pediatric Dentistry, we offer a variety of different dental sedation options for your little ones, including laughing gas, IV sedation, and even general anesthesia, when necessary.

With sedation, your child can relax and feel comfortable during their appointment, and get necessary dental care without fear, discomfort, or anxiety. What To Expect

When Having Your Child Sedated

The effects of sedation depend on the method you choose at your pediatric dentist in Naperville. Laughing gas has the mildest effects. Your child will feel giggly and happy, and will feel less anxious during their treatment. And after treatment, these effects wear off within a few minutes. They may feel a little dizzy or lightheaded after laughing gas sedation.

In IV sedation, your child will sleep through their appointment, and with general anesthesia, they will be rendered completely unconscious. Since they're deeper methods of sedation, IV sedation and general anesthesia have more deep and long-lasting side effects that can persist for up to 24 hours. Your child may be confused, groggy, and have impaired motor skills. Your child may also be nauseous or have a headache.

For more information about what to expect, we recommend asking Dr. Neelon Patel about your child’s sedation options when you visit Pinky Promise Pediatric Dentistry. She can break down each method in further detail.

Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates Partnership

Hey parents, great news! Pinky Promise Pediatric Dentistry now partners with Pediatric Dental Anesthesia Associates (PDAA). They provide pediatric specialty anesthesiologists, child-friendly nurses, and state-of-the-art equipment and medications to dental offices.

PDAA is a safe, efficient, and affordable option for patients with special needs, young or anxious patients, and those with multiple restorations. With PDAA, your child can receive the high-quality treatment they deserve in-house. This helps your little one feel more comfortable with the friendly team and warm environment they already feel safe in. Say goodbye to scary hospital visits and give us a call today!

Types Of Dental Sedation We Offer

At our office, we primarily offer laughing gas sedation and IV sedation, though we can also offer general anesthesia in some cases. Learn more about our sedation options in Naperville below.

Laughing Gas

Laughing gas sedation uses a nose mask to deliver a mixture of nitrous oxide into your child’s nose and lungs. They’ll breathe in deeply, and feel the effects right away. Laughing gas will make them feel happy and relaxed, and they will remain fully conscious and responsive throughout their entire appointment.

IV Sedation

IV sedation uses powerful sedative medications that are delivered intravenously (directly into a vein). This type of sedation will allow your child to sleep through their appointment, and forget what happened during their dental visit. However, they will not be completely unconscious, and will still be able to breathe on their own.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is rarely used at Pinky Promise Pediatric Dentistry, but may be necessary for some extensive dental procedures, or for children who are very anxious about dentistry. General anesthesia will make your child completely unconscious, and they will need a breathing machine to breathe properly. It is the most complex and costly type of sedation dentistry, but general anesthesia also offers the deepest level of sedation, which may be necessary in some situations.
